Disneyland Resort
A theme park in Anaheim that opened on July 17, 1955, built and operated by Walt Disney and designed as the first Disney theme park.
Disneyland opened its gates on July 17, 1955, in Anaheim at a cost of $17 million. It was the creation of Walt Disney himself, the only theme park he personally oversaw during his lifetime. The park sits on land that transformed a formerly agricultural area into what would become one of the world's most visited destinations.
The resort has expanded significantly since its opening. In 2001, Disney California Adventure Park opened adjacent to the original Disneyland Park, forming the Disneyland Resort. The two parks together welcome millions of annual visitors. Many Anaheim families have multigenerational ties to the park: first visits as children, later bringing their own kids, now visiting with grandchildren.
